Maintaining an Online Brand

I would say that keeping a professional and consistent online brand is very important these days. Social media was built upon the foundation of exactly what the title suggests--being social. Now though, the common social media sites are being used to brand ones self. By that I mean that people are posting articles relevant to their major, commenting on publications they find interesting, and following industry leaders, all to try to make themselves stand out against the competition.

So many companies are using social media as a basis for hiring and firing employees. One bad post, picture, or comment could stop you from being hired, or worse, get you fired from a job you already have.

When it comes to my social media sites, I am very well aware of what I am posting and what others are posting and tagging me in. I keep all of my comments light-hearted and encouraging, and I never bash anyone or use vulgar language, its just not appropriate. I am currently looking for a summer internship, so now more than ever, I am very conscious of what is being posted to my Facebook and Twitter.

LinkedIn is my most professional site and I like to share articles I find interesting and comment on ones I read. I also like to share marketing articles via Twitter and sometimes on Facebook too. If an employer sees that I am active in my industry and interested in leading news stories, hopefully they will appreciate it more over someone who posts inappropriate pictures and comments.
